IT and Operations Working Together in a Perfect World.
Indicators point to the fact that cloud services and solutions are being adopted by businesses at a rapidly growing rate. The industry watchers say growth will continue at double digit rates. But how much of the adoption is coming from collaboration between Operations and IT? It’s a well-known fact that not all the decisions to buy into the cloud are sanctioned or budgeted by the IT department. A popular term describing this is Shadow IT or Stealth IT. The definition essentially says that people and groups outside of IT are making IT investments without corporate IT involvement.
What prompts the operations personnel to pursue solutions outside IT is generally frustration with getting support from IT to help the operations work more efficiently and productively and across the boundaries of the business – customers and partners. When IT just says no – the cloud is not secure, and then pockets of cloud-based technology start to pop up. The Operations staff is most often not prepared to understand the risks of being outside solid IT governance.
How do you deal with this? Put on the armor and go to battle with operations and just say no? Or, maybe developing and fostering a team attitude, working cooperatively and collaboratively would be better for the organization and everyone’s stress levels and blood pressure. Adopt the attitude that you’re all one team and work together to create productive and secure environments that help to move the business forward without crushing productivity by simply saying no.
