SharePoint Online vs. On-Premise?

Andrew Connell posted an interesting article regarding some key points to consider when choosing SharePoint Online, Microsoft’s cloud based SharePoint deployment, or an On-Premise deployment.

There are many considerations that go well beyond a cost / break-even analysis based on the number of users in your environment. There are some important solution boundary differences that you must consider before choosing your path. For example, what features do you need? What is your plan for customization? How much control over the operating environment do you need? Are there regulatory, privacy, or competitive influences?

Certainly SharePoint Online has a robust feature set more than capable of handling complex, highly-scalable solutions as well as basic collaboration needs. But at the same time, an on-premise solution may offer a solution more aligned with your requirements. Or is a hybrid approach, using a hosting provider to manage your SharePoint Server infrastructure with a per-user/per-month fee the best fit?

Be sure to do some research up-front before making a commitment. Choose an option that you know meets your needs, both financial and technical, so you won’t be frustrated by barriers down the road.
